From Five Learners to Thousands: How Pip Rothwell Built Technology Triumphs

Jul 23, 2026

Sometimes a business begins with a polished plan, a launch strategy and a carefully mapped route to growth.

Technology Triumphs began because Pip Rothwell saw a problem she could not ignore.

After more than a decade as a Design and Technology teacher and head of department, Pip had become increasingly frustrated by shrinking budgets and the impact this was having on creative education.

In her final year in mainstream teaching, she was given just 33 pence per learner, per year, to teach practical DT.

“I was having to teach theoretically how to cut wood because we couldn’t afford the wood to cut.”

That was not the education Pip wanted to deliver, and it was not the experience she believed young people deserved.

A Gap That Needed Fixing

Pip initially explored private tuition as a way to rediscover some of the job satisfaction she had lost in school.

She began with five home-educated learners around her dining-room table on the Isle of Sheppey.

It was only then that she discovered a much bigger issue.

Home-educated learners could sit external exams in subjects such as English and maths, but creative subjects often relied on coursework, practical assessment and access to an approved centre.

Without that route, many young people were effectively locked out of gaining qualifications in subjects such as Design and Technology, cookery, textiles and art.

“It wasn’t some grand plan. It was I saw a problem and I needed to fix it.”

While on maternity leave with her second son, Pip took on the process of registering independently with an awarding body, a task normally handled by entire teams within schools.

That decision gave home-educated learners access to portfolio-based qualifications accepted by many colleges and employers as alternatives to GCSEs and A levels.

Taking Creative Qualifications Online

Technology Triumphs initially grew through local workshops, but another barrier soon appeared.

Families living further away could not reach Pip’s venue.

One parent asked whether the courses could be delivered online.

This was before the pandemic, when online tuition was far less common. Pip had to consider how she would teach practical subjects remotely, protect the integrity of the qualifications and confirm that submitted work belonged to each learner.

When she presented the model to the awarding body, the response was:

“That’s never been done before.”

Pip’s answer was simple.

“That doesn’t mean it can’t be done.”

She launched one Level 2 cookery course online in 2019 and gained 80 learners within three days, without paid advertising.

That moment showed her the scale of the demand.

Flexibility That Removes Barriers

Technology Triumphs now supports learners across the UK and in 15 other countries, offering creative qualifications from entry level through to Level 3.

Courses currently include:

  • Cookery, bakery and cake decorating
  • Design and Technology
  • Textiles and photography
  • Art and other creative subjects

The provision is designed differently from a traditional school timetable.

Learners are not chased for work or forced to meet rigid deadlines. Some complete a two-year course within six months, while others may need four or five years.

That flexibility can be transformative for neurodivergent learners and young people who struggle with the pressure or structure of mainstream education.

In a school setting, a pupil who needs longer than two years may never complete the qualification.

At Technology Triumphs, the timeframe adapts to the learner rather than the learner being expected to fit the system.

Building Community Online

Pip is also conscious that home education can sometimes feel isolating.

Technology Triumphs has therefore been built around more than course materials and assessment.

The team creates connection through:

  • Closed groups where learners can share work and ask questions
  • Ongoing dialogue between assessors, students and families
  • Live awards events and showcases
  • Prizes, trophies and celebrations of learner achievement

Although the provision is remote, Pip has worked hard to preserve the relationships and sense of community she valued as a teacher.

The business now assesses around 1,000 learners at any one time, with several thousand having passed through its courses.

Creating What Learners Actually Need

Technology Triumphs continues to grow by listening closely to families.

Pip has begun developing customised qualifications where there is clear demand but no existing course.

A new Level 2 bakery certificate was created because learners wanted to focus specifically on baking rather than general cookery.

That course has already sparked ideas for many more.

The opportunity is not limited to home-educated learners either. School pupils use the qualifications as extracurricular activities, to strengthen college applications or to access creative subjects unavailable at school. Adults and parents also join for professional development or personal enjoyment.
