From Classroom to Community Impact – How Hannah Built a First Aid Business That Changes Lives

Apr 30, 2026

When Hannah first stepped away from her role as an assistant head teacher, she wasn’t walking away from purpose.

She was searching for a way to keep it.

After 15 years in education, the reality of leadership hours, weekends and school holidays no longer aligned with family life. Something had to shift. What she didn’t expect was that the answer would come through a completely different door and quietly bring together everything she’d always been drawn to.

“I realised I didn’t want to just do something corporate where it didn’t feel like you were making a difference. I still wanted to do something that meant something to people.”

Today, Hannah runs Daisy First Aid across Hertfordshire, Enfield and Hackney – delivering paediatric and workplace first aid training that doesn’t just tick a box, but builds real confidence.

And what started as a solo venture has grown into something much bigger.

Building Something That Works – For Families, Not Against Them

Like many class-based business owners, Hannah didn’t start with a grand scaling plan.

She started with a need for flexibility.

And then, within just a few months, demand told a different story.

“I was having enquiries for two or three classes every day and weekends… and it just wasn’t sustainable on my own.”

That moment could have become a bottleneck.

Instead, it became a turning point.

Hannah began bringing in freelance trainers early on, something she hadn’t originally planned. That decision unlocked growth – not just in revenue, but in reach, impact and opportunity.

Fast forward to now, and Hannah leads a team of 10 trainers across 10 territories.

What’s striking isn’t just the scale. It’s the intention behind it.

Her team includes people from all kinds of backgrounds – nurses, emergency services, cabin crew, teachers – each bringing a different lens to the same mission.

And crucially, the business has been built in a way that works around real life.

“I’ve loved creating a team where people can work, do something really important, and still be around for their families. That’s the thing I’m most proud of.”

What Scaling Actually Looks Like Behind the Scenes

Growth didn’t happen by accident.

It came from making deliberate decisions about structure, support and systems.

Hannah recognised early that if she wanted to grow, she couldn’t hold everything herself.

Key shifts in her business included:

  • Bringing in a business manager to handle day-to-day operations
  • Building a team of freelance trainers to expand delivery capacity
  • Investing in external marketing and sales support for specialist expertise
  • Using systems (like scheduling apps) to streamline bookings and communication

That combination has allowed her to scale without chaos.

It’s also allowed her to step into a different role as a business owner – one focused on strategy, leadership and growth, rather than trying to do everything at once.

Leadership That Creates Loyalty

One of the standout parts of Hannah’s journey is her team retention.

Some trainers have been with her for over six years.

That doesn’t happen by accident.

It comes down to how the business is structured and how people feel within it.

“I don’t expect people to commit to certain hours. They choose the work that fits around their life. And we all support each other when things come up.”

There’s flexibility, but there’s also connection.

Despite trainers working independently, Hannah has built a strong sense of team culture – from shared WhatsApp support to annual meet-ups that bring everyone together.

It’s a reminder that in class-based businesses, leadership isn’t just about delivery standards.

It’s about creating an environment people want to stay in.

The Shift That Changed Everything – From One-Off Bookings to Contracted Clients

Another key evolution in Hannah’s business has been moving away from one-off bookings towards contracted, recurring work.

And it’s transformed how the business operates.

Instead of unpredictable income, she now works with schools, nurseries and multi-academy trusts on an ongoing basis.

The benefits are clear:

  • Predictable, consistent revenue across the year
  • Easier forward planning for both the business and clients
  • Stronger relationships with organisations that value quality training
  • Increased impact through repeated and deeper engagement

“It’s a win-win. They know what they’re spending, and we know what’s coming in.”

It’s a strategic shift that many class-based business owners aim for – and Hannah has made it work in a way that supports both growth and stability.

Where the Real Impact Happens

While the business has grown significantly, the heart of it hasn’t changed.

It’s still about people.

And often, it’s the small, human moments that say the most.

Hannah shared a story about a young student in a first aid class who was initially too anxious to take part. Instead of pushing, the approach was patient, understanding and tailored to her personality.

By the end of the day, everything had changed.

“She walked out a completely different person. You could see the pride in herself.”

That’s the impact.

Not just teaching skills, but building confidence that carries into interviews, careers and life.

And that’s why the work matters.

“Our mantra is – do something. Have a go. Because doing something is always better than doing nothing.”

Awards, Reflection and Recognising What You’ve Built

Hannah is a nominee for Team Led Business of the Year in the Class Business Awards, and her perspective on the process is one that many business owners will relate to.

Running your own business often means you’re the one solving problems, managing challenges and pushing things forward – without anyone pausing to say “well done.”

Which is exactly why this process matters.

“It made me think about the positive things I have achieved. You end up giving yourself and your team the praise you don’t always get.”

Beyond recognition, it creates space to reflect, review and reset.

And sometimes, that’s just as valuable as the outcome.
