From Lawyer to Skincare Founder: Melanie Brown’s Business Journey
Sometimes the businesses that make the biggest impact begin with a very personal problem.
That was exactly the case for Melanie Brown, founder of Mel’s Little Luxuries, who joined the Class Business Podcast to share how her business journey started with trying to help her daughter’s severe eczema.
What began as a search for natural skincare solutions slowly evolved into a business built around care, research, problem solving and supporting other women with sensitive skin.
And honestly, it’s such a brilliant example of how many businesses are created.
Not from grand plans.
Not from “perfect timing.”
But from seeing a real problem and wanting to solve it.
Building a Business Around a Real Need
Before launching her business, Mel originally trained and worked as a lawyer before taking a career break to focus on her family. During that time, she struggled to find products that helped her daughter’s skin condition, despite regular visits to doctors and trying multiple prescribed treatments.
Talking about that experience, Mel shared:
“I thought to myself, I need to find something that’s going to help her.”
That experience led her back to natural remedies she remembered from childhood and eventually into learning how to formulate skincare products herself.
Starting with a soap-making kit and later training with a former L’Oréal professional who had launched her own soap school, Mel began developing handmade soaps, balms and body care products using ingredients like shea butter, mango butter and olive oil.
One of the most powerful moments in the interview was hearing how quickly her daughter’s skin started to improve once she found the right ingredients.
As Mel explained:
“It was a shea butter that her skin took to, if I can use that expression, and it just supported it. You could just see a difference in a couple of weeks.”
What stood out most in the conversation was how much research, care and testing goes into creating products safely and professionally.
Mel explained how every product has to go through cosmetic safety assessments, ingredient checks and registration processes before reaching the market. It’s a side of product-based businesses many people never see, but it highlights the level of professionalism and responsibility involved in building a trusted brand.
Creating a Business That Fits Around Family Life
Another part of Mel’s story that I know so many business owners will relate to is the lifestyle shift behind the business.
She shared how becoming a lawyer meant long hours away from home and missing time with her children. Building Mel’s Little Luxuries gave her the opportunity to create something flexible that allowed her to be more present for her family while also helping other people.
Today, she works from a workshop converted from her garage, handmaking products while balancing the many moving parts that come with running a small business.
And it’s a reminder that behind every independent business is someone wearing multiple hats at once.
Creating.
Marketing.
Selling.
Researching.
Problem solving.
Supporting customers.
That level of dedication is something I always admire about independent business owners.
Why Stories Matter in Business
One of the reasons I loved speaking with Mel is because her story perfectly reflects something I talk about all the time within the class business industry:
People connect with stories.
When discussing her role as a judge for the Class Business Awards, Mel shared that one of the key things she looks for in applications is the story behind the business and the impact it creates.
As she explained:
“It’s not always about ‘I created the business for money.’ It’s they’ve seen a gap in the market to help people.”
That emotional connection matters.
Because businesses built around genuine purpose and real-life experiences often create the strongest communities around them.
Mel’s story is such a brilliant reminder that business growth doesn’t always start with a business plan.
Sometimes it starts with wanting to make life a little easier for someone you love.
