From Burnout to Building a 20-Tutor Team – Emma Harper’s Story of Growth, Values and Honest Leadership
When Emma Harper began tutoring, she wasn’t planning to build a business.
She was trying to survive.
After losing her mum while eight weeks pregnant and being diagnosed with PTSD, Emma found herself at breaking point. As a secondary school maths teacher, the emotional toll of classroom life had become overwhelming, and her mental health was suffering. She needed a way to step back without walking away from education entirely.
So she started small with a few Facebook posts, a handful of tutoring sessions and a simple plan to reduce her hours and find something more sustainable.
What happened next surprised even her.
Within six months, Emma had more demand than she could manage alone. Parents were actively searching for specialist support their children weren’t getting in school, and word spread quickly. Emma brought in another tutor to help with maths, then added English support as families asked for more subjects.
That was the moment the “side hustle” became something bigger.
Emma rebranded as Core Plus Tuition and began building a team. Today, just a few years later, she leads a network of 20 tutors supporting young people across multiple subjects through one-to-one sessions, online learning and small group tuition.
But what makes Emma’s business stand out is not just the speed of its growth.
It’s the way she leads it.
Building Trust Through Honesty
Many families come to tuition feeling worried, overwhelmed and desperate for quick results. Emma understands that pressure, but she refuses to make promises that cannot be delivered.
If a child is unlikely to pass an exam in the immediate term, she doesn’t hide it. Instead, she explains the situation clearly and creates a realistic plan.
Rather than saying “work harder and hope for the best,” Emma works with families to map out an achievable pathway, often aiming for later resits rather than immediate exam pressure. Parents don’t feel misled. Children don’t feel like failures. Everyone understands the next step.
This approach builds something far more valuable than false reassurance.
It builds trust.
Emma believes families want honesty paired with solutions. When parents feel supported rather than sold to, they stay. They recommend. They build long-term relationships with the business.
A Values-Led Business Model
As Core Plus Tuition grew, Emma realised she couldn’t scale without clarity. The business needed direction, standards and a clear identity. That meant going back to basics and defining the values that would shape every decision.
Those values now guide:
• Recruitment – Tutors are chosen not only for subject knowledge but for alignment with Emma’s principles and approach
• Client communication – Families are guided clearly through every stage, from enquiry to onboarding
• Service delivery – Students are treated as individuals with different needs, not numbers in a system
• Decision-making – Growth is shaped by long-term impact rather than quick wins
This foundation allows the business to grow without losing its integrity. Emma doesn’t have to constantly “fix” misalignment because she hires people who already share her ethos.
The Recruitment Reality No One Talks About
Finding quality tutors is one of Emma’s biggest challenges.
Ex-teachers often feel burnt out and hesitant to stay in education. Teachers still in schools lack the capacity for additional work. And while Emma welcomes university students and non-traditional tutors who bring fresh perspectives, she must ensure quality remains consistent.
Her solution has been careful, values-based recruitment and strong professional networks. She collaborates rather than competes, believing there is space for everyone in the sector.
The result is a diverse team that can support students with different learning styles and emotional needs.
Service Businesses Win on Experience, Not Just Results
Emma believes that customer service is the difference between businesses that survive and those that grow.
“Being what school isn’t and that’s not anti-school, I still think the colleagues that are in school are doing an amazing job and they are stronger people than I am. But the families that seek out tuition they don’t want more school.”
Families don’t just want tuition. They want reassurance. They want clarity. They want to know what happens next.
Too many service businesses leave clients in the dark once an enquiry is made. Emma focuses heavily on guiding families through a clear journey, explaining the process and setting expectations early.
This creates safety and confidence. Parents feel cared for rather than processed.
And in service industries, that experience matters just as much as the outcome.
Growth Creates New Opportunities
After leaving teaching fully in 2024, Emma focused on scaling Core Plus Tuition and tripled the business turnover within a year. As her profile grew, other service-based business owners began asking how she had done it.
That demand sparked a second business.
Emma now mentors other service providers through her Make Your Marketing Count community, helping them use Facebook effectively, improve their marketing and grow sustainably. She works with tutors, therapists, virtual assistants and other service professionals who want structured, ethical growth.
“I believe in honesty it’s one of my biggest values.”
Her journey shows that business evolution often comes from responding to need rather than following rigid plans.
